A Rosé By Any Other Name...and What the "Pubster - Gals" Think!

Spring has sprung, the grass is rizz'd, I wonder where my Rosé is? Spring in the Northern Hemisphere is the perfect time to be sipping on a nice, cool, crisp Rosé. But, then again, Summer is the perfect time to be sipping on a nice, cool, crisp Rosé. To that end, there is never a time when sipping on a Rosé isn't the right time.

When I was first entering the market as a legal wine drinker, Rosé was merely a White Zinfandel, blush, or pink wine. There were approximately two that were offered and typically came from a jug, they were Sutter Home and Gallo. Rosé, the American version, of White Zin, was first produced in the 1860s in Lodi and as a result, became a nice alternative to classic red or white wine. White Zinfandel is still one of the most sold, by volume in the US and has a lovely nickname "Cougar Juice." Over the years and with the growth of wine-drinking sophistication, so it goes more Rosé is being offered here in the US and it is no surprise as women are becoming one of the biggest purchasers of wine and the palette is forever becoming more sophisticated towards the wide variety of wine and beautiful food pairing options.

Rosé is one of the most consumed wines in France and in 2018 there was a huge concern that because of the growth in popularity and market for fine Rosé wine throughout the world and the United States that they might not have enough to get them through their summer. Fortunately, the wine-making industry in the United States is beginning to catch up with its much older French sister and as vines mature and the field of viticulture booms, the US winemaker is beginning to hold their own against the legacy of France, Italy, and Spain. How Do Local/Regional Winemakers Hold Up Against France and Italy?

Recently, I asked a group of my "Pubster - Gals" to join me in a Rosé wine tasting. Five willingly stepped up to the plate to humor me, but ultimately took their job very seriously. Two of the tasters had just returned from a Rosé wine event in Nashville, so their palettes were primed and ready for more!

Rosé for the tasting were:

Prophecy Rosé 2017 - Vin de France

Tasting Notes for Prophecy: Minerally, citrus, very dry, tangy, aligns well with a Sauvignon Blanc

St.Julian Winery Chambourcin Rosé 2018 - Michigan

Tasting Notes for Chambourcin: Fruity, berry (raspberry, strawberry, fruit forward, buttery after-tones.

St.Julian Winery Tempranillo Rosé 2018 - Michigan

Tasting Notes for Tempranillo Rosé: Light, fruity, herbal, earthy, smooth

Shady Creek Winery Rosé 2018 - Michigan City Indiana

Tasting Notes for American Rosé:Medium body, intense bouquet, oaky, cherry tones, vanilla after-tones

Villa Alena Rosé 2018 - Piedmonte Italy (Trader Joe's)

Tasting Notes for Villa Alena: Light, semi-dry, fruit-forward, raspberry

So the moment of truth; which Rosé came in first place with the Pubster Gals? St.Julian Winery Tempranillo Rosé 2018 - Michigan was the overall winner with Shady Creek Winery Rosé 2018 at a close second.

ArtSees Diner highly recommends both St. Julian's Winery, (we prefer the Union Pier tasting room) and Shady Creek Winery in Michigan City.

Follow the links above to discover more about each winery and make sure you visit very soon!

Bistro On the Greens - Michiana's Newest Hot Spot

There is nothing better than celebrating your friend’s birthday! Well, maybe there is something better and that is celebrating your friend’s birthday with great food at a very special place. One that offers all the ambiance and class to make better - spectacular! Such was the case with my friend’s birthday celebration at Bistro On the Greens.
Bistro On the Greens is the brainchild of restaurant entrepreneur John Moultrie. John brings to his newest endeavor not only his love of fine NOLA, Southern cuisine but an extensive background in jazz to the restaurant nestled in the historical Legacy Golf Course, LaPorte Indiana. Moultrie’s clever double-entendre with the use of “Greens” provides a window into his creative flair. In short he has nailed a “whole in one.”

Let me recreate the evening for you; Upon arriving we encountered a few diners leaving the restaurant and asked them how their evening was. Aside from their very happy content faces we knew they were well pleased after asking them about their experience. Their response was, “fabulous!” My friend asked for recommendations and they quickly listed what they dined on and summarized by saying, “all of it is fantastic!” That was a great way to kick off the evening.

We were greeted by a lovely lady who was ready and willing to make our night a special one. John Moultrie’s attention to detail was everywhere from the warm welcome of the hostess to the subtle lighting and overall glow. But, that was only the beginning. Not only were we embraced by a cordial hostess and seductive lighting, but also by the music floating from a baby grand piano and “larger than life” jazz greats. Moultrie’s experience in hospitality is highlighted by the way he strategically placed the music front and center. It is very reminiscent of my favorite places to visit in Chicago and Manhattan. If you want music to be the entrancing spirit of the joint then, don’t put the music in the back as an afterthought let music be your muse. Bistro On the Greens’ has live music five days a week. Mike is the Bistro’s house musician and not only does he play a mean piano, but he is a spot on crooner with a vast repertoire.

Whether you are coming for a romantic dinner for two, or out with friends, just because, or with a large party ready to celebrate birthdays the “Bistro” is a perfect dining experience. The overall layout and seating has been designed to provide a wide variety of options from cozy intimate seating, a private dining room vibe, or a more open dining feel. Additionally, there is a gorgeous, well stocked bar manned by a local favorite Kyle. The bar is located in the back of the restaurant and has a great view of the greens for those who are out for drinks and live music. John Moultrie’s brings his down home sophistication and his love of Louisiana cuisine to Northwest Indiana in a way that very few entrepreneurs could. Do not be surprised when John comes to your table to make sure that you are content and are well cared for. It is his down home charm that really sets Bistro On the Greens apart from other restaurants.
What do I look for when I am out for a special evening and what makes a venue go from a place to eat to a place to remember? It is: 1) lighting, 2) music, 3) personable service 4) timing of food delivery 5) well crafted cocktails and fine wine 6) willingness to make the event special 7) food quality, variety and most importantly 8) an owner that lets me and my party know that our being there is all that matters. Bistro On the Greens earns 8 stars! Now onto the food!
Moultrie’s desire to share his Grandmother’s authentic recipes is at the heart of his menu. You will find all the traditional NOLA favorites like fried green tomatoes, alligator nuggets, jambalaya, gumbo, to ribeye steaks, hand packed hamburgers, salads, flatbread pizzas and more. Everyone in our party was well-pleased with their entrees. I enjoyed fried chicken breasts with greens (superbly done) smashed sweet potatoes and a cheese biscuit along with an appetizer of fried green tomatoes. Sadly there was no room for dessert, that will have to wait until next time.

Bistro On the Greens easy to get to and whether you live in the immediate area, including, Michiana, NWI, or are looking for a get away from Chicagoland, Bistro On the Greens is a must and well worth the drive!

Stop in and tell John that ArtSees Diner, aka, Mary E., sent you.

"This trio of professional musicians is an act you do not want to miss!! Their outstanding musical interpretations of a variety of songs are outstanding and a lot of fun, too! I am looking forward to seeing them again at this upcoming event." Jerry

David Lahm is a jazz pianist, songwriter and accompanist who divides his time between NYC and his second home in Harbor Country. He and his late wife Judy Kreston had a very successful cabaret act in New York, collaborated on three albums and concertized at the Acorn Theater in Three Oaks several times, over their many years together. He has conceived and produced a couple of unique recordings: "Medleyfying: a Centennial tribute to Richard Rodgers" and two CDs featuring "Jazz Takes On Joni Mitchell."

Over the last six years he has been, in his own words "very happy to have been able to work with some excellent performers in the Michiana area." This chapter of his career takes another step forward in his collaboration with Steve and Mary.

Mary E. has been singing for over three decades. She and her partner Steve Champagne were named Best Acoustic Duo in 2015 by the Kankakee Area Music Awards. For over 20 years, Mary E. has been a guest vocalist with Kankakee Municipal Band. Mary began her career singing standards, light opera, and Broadway. Since forming an acoustic duo with Steve in 2007, they have focused on a wide range of songs made popular between the 60s and 70s, and love bringing their music to the Michiana region.
Steve has dedicated his life to perfecting his knowledge of the Beatles and other favs. Some call him a walking jukebox the way he can recall lyrics, melodies, and overall style. He has been singing and playing guitar since his earliest memory. Together, Steve and Mary E. have hours of pop-rock play list along with standards.

Lahm, Champagne and Rapier -  is the newest endeavor of these three music lovers, and guests will be entertained with a whole new repertoire of jazz standards, new spins on old favorites, and songs that they love to perform.

Tickets can be obtained through eventbrite or direct through snail mail (maryerapier@gmail.com) for address.

Fire & Water: A Diamond On the Dune

Image may contain: sky and outdoor

Welcome to Michigan City Indiana! Only a select few seem to know of the wonders that this magical place holds for travelers looking for a place to unwind, "create, play and repeat." Let me paint a picture for you...

Image may contain: sky, cloud, night, twilight and outdoor

After a long work week you want nothing more than to escape the intense "City" heat and get out of the intense traffic that is often the case with Chicago and its surrounding burbs. Where do you go where you can still treat your family to a day in the sun without paying a fortune for fees, parking and food? You head east on the 80/94 corridor and come on into Michigan City Indiana by way of 12, 20 or 421. Michigan City is on the move and no matter which way you careen into the "City by the Lake" you will find at your journey's end the North End of this quaint home away from home Washington Park and sitting on the crown of this natural  resource is North Pointe Pavilion, the home of Fire & Water.

Image may contain: one or more people, people sitting, table, outdoor and indoor

Fire & Water is the brain child of entrepreneur and Michigan City's social guru, Mohamed Mroueh. Moe as he is lovingly called has brought a taste of his homeland Lebanon and has enriched us all as a result. From the first time you meet him, you just know that this guy knows customer service. It is not unusual to see Moe walking around meeting and talking with his customers.

Image may contain: drink and outdoor

Fire & Water is located at 6 on the Lake and offers an upscale sandwiches, Moe's traditional hummus (the best you will ever taste), grape leaves, Baba ghanoush along with hamburgers, gyro's, fish tacos, pulled pork, jerk chicken and more. For those looking for an specialty cocktail or craft beer, you will find a full bar with professional bartenders ready to serve you up in style.

Beautiful views of Lake Michigan and breathtaking sunsets.
Image may contain: sky, ocean, cloud and outdoor
Perfect views from the rooftop invokes the photographer in you. Look for a perfect view of the Chicago skyline and see a sunset like you have never seen it before. Many who come here from tropical places say they never saw a prettier sunset.

Keep your eyes on Fire & Water's facebook page for weekly events and specials. It is not unusual to have something extraordinary on Thursday nights so as to usher in the weekend in grand style. Additionally, every Sunday night there is *live music "Up on the Roof" ready to put to sleep a long weekend and kick off yet another amazing week here at the "City By the Lake."

Image may contain: ocean, text and water
*Sunset Sundays features local musicians Steve Champagne and Mary E. Rapier, known as Steve and Mary E., every Sunday night from 6:30 to sunset singing songs from the 60's, 70's and assorted light rock, guaranteed to make you smile.

A few things to keep in mind: Food is ordered on the lower level which also offers comfortable seating. Food runners are on hand to bring food up to your table after ordering. There are also rooftop servers who can take your food order, you will pay upon ordering and availability varies.

A couple things to keep in mind: Local residents have access to free parking by obtaining a parking pass. LaPorte residents who are outside the Michigan City city limits can obtain an annual parking pass for $25. (More information here)  There is a $7 fee to enter the park and utilize the secure parking and all amenities that Washington Park provides the recreational enthusiast. This charge is not imposed by Fire & Water. The North Pointe Pavilion is a part of the Michigan City Parks Department and as a result the fee is necessary to maintain the overall upkeep of one of the finest parks in Northwest Indiana and surrounding areas. For those coming from the Chicago-land area the $7 parking fee is a very affordable one when compared to the cost of parking in the city.  The Fire & Water staff has done a phenomenal job at keeping the cost of food and drink way below the normal fees found found at outdoor venues which truly does help offset the inconvenient parking fee that some tourists are charged to park.

For more information go to Fire & Water and keep up-to-date about all the amazing things this venue and the North Pointe Pavilion at Washington Park provides you and your family.

Michigan City's North End on the South Shore is Alive and Ready To Serve!

Restaurants New To Michigan City, #mymichigancity:
Hum Hum Mediterranean Cuisine
Dough Boys Sandwich Shop
Today's post focuses on a recent visit to two of Michigan City's newest restaurants. Included are the best places to grab a bite to eat on the North End of Michigan City. The North End on the South Shore - we love it!

Steve and I just finished up an amazing lunch compliments of the Michigan City North End! Both new restaurants are located next to the South Shore Train Line's 11th St., depot.
We love this place! We enjoyed sandwiches from Dough Boys and I stopped in at HUM HUM Restaurant as well. ‪ #‎DoughBoys‬ you were firing on all cylinders! The place is quaint, friendly and I loved watching the "boys" preparing sandwich masterpieces! Steve ordered the Struben with German potato salad. I had the beef brisket sandwiches (forgot the name) with German potato salad. We also ordered the hummus. All three items were absolutely outstanding! The bread was superb. Next door to ‪#‎HumHum‬ and tried out their grape leaves. PHENOMENAL! What a special treat to have so many options all in one place! I look forward to going back for the falafel as well as gyro, chicken shwarma. Riders of the ‪#‎SouthShoreTrain‬ to ‪#‎Chicago‬ need to be aware of this hotspot! Chicago Food Bloggers this is a must stop! It really was so cool - while I was waiting for our order the train pulled up to the 11th St. Station. Immediately ‪#‎mymichigancity‬ became a whole new world and I wasn't missing the bustle of Manhattan quite as much! AMAZING!

Chicago - it is important to know that the tax rate is extremely low, the cost of libations equally so and there is NO cost to park your car! All is within walking district (aside from Shady Creek Winery and Burn'em Brewing) of the 11th St. South Shore Train Depot.

Other Favorite Places To Dine Out, Hang Out and Enjoy the North End : Overboard at the Marina - 12 On the Lake American cuisine, great views of the lake and live music.
Trattoria Tonelli's World class Italian cuisine with a superb ambiance.
Galvestons Steak and wonderful libations.
Shore Line Brewery Chef inspired bar food - in house brewery, live music.

ArtSees Diner Favorites

Hello all, it has been a while since we wrote a blog about our dining experiences. Mostly we have been enjoying some of our favorite places here in the Northwest Indiana area. So as to not lose touch with all of you I thought I would do a "Favorites" segment.

Copper Rock Steakhouse  - Four Winds Casino
Copper Rock is tucked inside of Four Winds Casino, located in New Buffalo, Michigan. Not only will you find attentive, professional staff but outstanding Chef prepared cuisine. One of the highlights of CRS - is the incredible gourmet bread basket that is served to every guest. Don't forget to indulge in the chocolate truffle beignet following your entree. This highly ranked steakhouse is known for its extreme wine selection and hand-crafted cocktails. The portions are very generous. So go easy.
My recommendation: Himalayan Beef IMG_20150502_181706800

The Pickle and Turnip - Transitioning to Catering Only
What can I say - I will miss this place. See my reviews and weep with me. But stay tuned for Moe's newest ventures - Fire and Water at the Beach and Reserved at North Pointe - An experience in private dining.

Hokkaido - Sushi
Hokkaido Japanese Restaurant is one of the newest additions to the Uptown Art's District in Michigan City Indiana. This quaint, Manhattan-style boutique restaurant prides itself on the artistry behind preparing Sushi. If you are looking for fresh, hip cuisine, then Hokkaido is the place to go.
My recommendations: Tuna-Avocado Roll and Vegetable Tempura

Song - Asian, Sushi - Traditional Chinese
A fairly typical Asian restaurant in general, but Song has a different tune. It offers hand-rolled, freshly made Sushi and Rolls. Song is extremely affordable and the service is wonderful.
My recommendation: Hunan tofu and the White Tuna and Avocado Roll.

Maxine's - American French
Maxine's located in the heart of the Uptown Arts District is the perfect place to steal away with friends, family or a loved one. It is definitely a great date night place. One can expect wonderful steaks, unusual dishes such as Cioppino, a combination of seafood, white fish in a tomato base. A must try when dining at Maxine's is their French Onion soup. Perfection! Also be sure to ask what the featured cocktail, ravioli, flat bread pizza and yes, their featured burger. You will not be disappointed!
My recommendation: All of the above and especially the French Onion soup.

Barker Inn - AYCE Walleye (Friday Night Only)
Barker Inn AYCE Walleye is worth the trip. It is worth the hour and a half of second hand smoke. I know that sounds bad, but Barker Inn allows smoking in keeping with the majority of their long-standing clientele. If sitting in doesn't grab you, then place an order and carry it out. It is well worth the $10.99! Truly amazing!
My recommendation: It is obvious.

Shady Creek Winery
This delightful winery in the eastern countryside of Michigan City is the perfect way to escape and unwind. The wine makers blend grapes from California wine country and Southwest Michigan. In addition to a wonderful location it also offers small plates and frequent events with expanded fare.

My recommendation: Petite Sirah and cheese plate for two.

Stop by and enjoy what all the locals have to say about food and more.

Geja's Cafe, Lincoln Park, Chicago Illinois, Cheers!

I first enjoyed Geja's Fondue Cafe over 10 years ago when my daughters brought me there for Mother's Day. It was a truly memorable experience, but, so long ago that I can't really speak to the specifics. What I do remember is that it was the moment when I fell in love with fondue.
So, speed ahead a few years. Last year I had the pleasure of interviewing Kirby Matthews . Matthews is Geja’s Café’s General Manager, wine buyer and force behind the monthly Winemaker dinner series. Every month, he creates a new theme for the dinners. Since speaking with Kirby, a visit to Geja's Cafe has been on my bucket list and thanks to perfect timing I was able to make it over and share it with my daughter and her husband. Just being back in my old neighborhood heightened the sense of wonder and ¨Ahh!¨
I made our reservations through their online Open Table reservation system, which is delightfully convenient. We had hoped for a 6pm reservation, but, the only available times were before or after 7p. So we settled for 5:30. Our special night actually began a few weeks earlier when I purchased a Groupon coupon to make it possible for me to treat my special guests to a culinary delight. (the perfect way to try places you otherwise wouldn't)
Initially, we were greeted by a very friendly valet staff. Moving down into the Cafe immediately transported us to a European cafe or a Spanish hideaway. I was surprised; initially we believed that maybe we happened upon a slow night. Boy were we wrong. It filled up very quickly. The cafe was bustling in no time.
Anticipate an incredible wait staff, a warm romantic ambiance, and delectable entrees that will tickle your senses. Even meeting Manager Jeff with one of the friendliest handshakes in all of Chicago makes the visit extraordinary.
We were taken care of by Jair. Although looks are not supposed to matter, let me just say in this case, between the very handsome Jair and his attention to detail it was heavenly. It wasn't just Jair, but, his assistant was extremely attentive, bringing us fresh glasses of water, and ensuring that we were never required to ask for anything.
Geja's offers a very decadent house cheese fondue, flaming chocolate fondue, along with fresh vegetables and top quality seafood, aged beef tenderloin and chicken breasts. The entree's, dipping sauces, very green - fresh salad and other adornments make for a fabulous dining extravaganza.
My daughter and her husband enjoyed the Prince Geja's Combination as well as the Deluxe Seafood entree. I enjoyed the Aged Beef Tenderloin with Chicken Breast combination. With each entree anticipate a wide assortment of multi-colored peppers, onion rings, mushrooms, potatoes and broccoli.
Along with the wide variety of seafood, chicken and tenderloin are also a selection of cheeses from around the world as well as vegetarian selections. Wine lovers anticipate a celebration of wines from around the world.
Things to note:
  • Dress is dress to upper-casual. No baseball caps, tennis shoes, casual shorts, etc.
  • Reservations are recommended in advance, especially for weekends.
  • Reservations can be made online, Wine Dinners reservations must be made by phone:  773.281.9101
  • No children under the age of 10. Because of the hot oils and open flames at the table, maturity is highly recommended.
  • Don't come rushed! It is a nice leisurely, potentially very romantic experience.
  • Consider cabbing it in or staying overnight at one of the wonderful hotels. Enjoy the wine and all that the experience has to offer.
Special recommendation: Consider limiting your after-dinner plans. You will be gastronomically pleased...it is truly a time to sit back and relax.

In closing, Geja's Cafe is a must visit whether you are visiting Chicagoland for a business trip, vacation, or you happen to be fortunate enough to live in one of the most spectacular gastronomic centers in the entire USA. As they begin to celebrate another year as one of Lincoln Park's mainstays, be certain to reserve a Winemaker's Dinners. For only $55 per person you will be treated to a 4 course dinner paired with fine wine specially chosen for the evening.

Here is to another 50 fabulous years! Geja's is without question one of the most spectacular restaurants in the Midwest. I look forward to a future visit, in fact, I am thinking a Winemaker's dinner soon will be the perfect way to celebrate my sister's 50th. It only makes sense, right?

Get your Groupon Coupon for a limited time!

Geja's Addendum! I went back and this time I brought Steve Champagne. He is typically not a big fondue fan, but, he absolutely loved Geja's Cafe! This makes me very happy, because I love Geja's. We will be back! Make sure you get your vote in and help Geja's remain as the most romantic restaurant. Vote here! Then go see for yourself.

Where the Culinary Rubber Meets the Comedic Road

Remember how I was raving about Italian Night each Thursday at "It's Vegas, Baby!" at Blue Chip Casino and Spa in Michigan City, Indiana?

Well, just when we thought it couldn't get any better, it got way better - orders of magnitude better as a matter of fact (assuming you're engineer enough to appreciate that phrase).

First of all, Sunday evening was their regular menu, which we'd accidentally seen once, but never ordered from. It contains a large array of selections, from appetizers, to hand made pizzas, to sandwiches, to home style cooking, to significant seafood and steak offerings. There were also specials. We started with the best jalapeño poppers we've ever had.

I have cat-like curiosity about meatloaf, so I just had to know. It came with mashed potatoes, those curly, fried onion thingies that are a bit like loose Christmas tree garland, and sliced, cooked carrots. Just the right amount of a fine mushroom gravy coated the top of the meat. And I'm sorry, mom, but this was far and away the best meatloaf I've ever had. It was a solid inch and a half thick, and more on the meaty side than the bready side, which is how I prefer my meatloaf.

My partner ordered the seven ounce filet special, which included green beans and garlic mashed potatoes. She said it was to die for and, indeed, my taste buds crossed through this veil of saliva to awaken in a more heavenly place after sampling it.

Courtesy of the casino's generosity in the form of food comps, we were there to sample. To that end, we also ordered the margherita pizza, which wound up being best of class as well. We had just enough funds to order the chocolate silk pie, which was essentially a fireworks climax to our gluttonous foreplay. We should have eaten only half of it (isn't it great when you have to look either over or around your dessert to see the rest of the room?), but (sing the rest of this to Don McLean's "American Pie") Satan was laughing with delight, the day, the waistline, died.

But that wasn't all. The $23 bottle of wine we selected was fantastic *and* we stayed on for the free comedy show (a Sunday night feature, I believe), ordering a couple more bottles of the same along the way. I suppose three bottles of wine for two people sounds excessive but, hey, we're talking about a five hour period on an extremely solid base of memorable food, and a couple comedians whose material would have leveled us even without Bacchus' ecstatic blood coursing through our own veins. As a matter of fact, the final comedian Vince Carone was so spot on regarding what's wrong with America that George Carlin had to have been hovering somewhere in the room, flashing two thumbs up while grinning from ear to ear.

Our server Heather was a real delight. She was warm and attentive, her timing impeccable. If the kitchen was the orchestra, she was the conductor shaping the phrasing, the balance, the overall experience. Bravo, maestro Heather! Bravo!

Make haste to this incredibly versatile eatery. The menu has you covered across a broad spectrum of prices. Did I mention that they even have a "make your own mac and cheese" offering? I mean, need I say any more?

It's Redemption, Baby!

Oh, for the love of the difference a couple weeks makes!

We rode into "It's Vegas, Baby!" at Blue Chip Casino and Spa in Michigan City, Indiana a couple winners. Okay, the ride was a little bumpy on the video poker machines before that, despite lucking into a four-of-a-kind. But I had an hour of fun for not too much. And it hardly mattered, because food comps and some luck in the Thursday night "Cash Grab" had us eating and drinking free anyway, which is the way it ought to be in such environs, no?

Not sure what happened to the usual staff, but it was as though they'd cleaned house - only one familiar face. But the new hostess was prompt and courteous. Our waiter Rudy was great the entire meal, checking on our satisfaction frequently, remembering that people might like ground parmesan *and* ground pepper on their soup and salad. He even poured our wine bottle on repeat visits, something we'd never experienced there before. Thanks, Rudy!

The food was better than ever. We dipped bread in fine olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I had the pasta fagioli, easily the best I've ever had anywhere. The house salad had wonderfully fresh greens, cucumbers, and cherry tomatoes - fantastic and radiating a sense of eating right under blue cheese dressing and the aforementioned ground garnishments.

Here's the thing. By the time you've had the bread, soup, and salad, you'd have to be Rocky Balboa to honestly have room for more. But, believe me, you make room, because you've only just begun.

My linguini and pomodoro was spectacular. I'd never had it before, actually, and although it's a huge helping, you're looking at it and all you're seeing is the pasta and some diced tomatoes with a nearly invisible sauce. But the moment you put a forkful in your mouth, you realize you were the victim of a wonderful optical illusion, because that transparent sauce packs an shockingly immense amount of flavor. And since you can hardly see it, it feels as though you're going rather low cal while "getting away with something" due to the intensity of flavor running roughshod over your tastebuds. I ate about half of mine, despite knowing the kind of abdominal tightrope I was walking, because there was still dessert to contend with.

And for me, it's always the spumoni. Such a perfect finish, served in a pleasantly lush state between solid and melted.

The bottle of Italian red we enjoyed throughout the meal was just $14.95, a steal for its quality, and in a fine restaurant. The five course (including the bread) meals were a paltry $12.95 a piece. Feeling as though you've taken the house is a good thing, and we're looking forward to feeling that again next Thursday. You should too.

"Untitled" and Unparalleled!

The feeling begins to swell and build like a well composed chill song knowing that you are about to indulge in something “special.” The excitement builds as you drive north on 90/94 and capture the luminous buildings coming into view. Senses are heightened. Lake Shore drive beckons you to come closer, closer, closer. Rhythmically you turn on to Monroe, catch a glimpse of Millennium Park, slide past the River, and join the electric vibe of the Near North hub of Chicago. The sultry stillness of “Untitled” can easily be missed as the entrance embraces a minimalist approach holding fast to the “speakeasy” dynamic. Let the mystery take you back to a place in time when no lady would dare enter into a supper club without being dressed to the nine’s. No man would risk being in the company of a well-dressed lady unless he was ready to suggest by adornment that he was indeed the escort of the night.

As you walk toward the unmarked doors, expect to be greeted by doormen who mean business, and their business is to beguile you to enter and leave all your prohibitions behind. Imagine yourself slowly, gracefully careening down an open staircase with adornments everywhere that suggest seduction. Let the reds, dark wood, gold hues, and gun metal grey encircle you like smoldering embers of passion and prose. As you descend into the foyer, the cabaret-esque stage dances before you with the same pageantry of carousels of times gone by. Surely you will see the likes of Greta Garbo, Bette Davis, or Clarke Gable sitting at stage side. Live music swirls throughout like incense rising to the heavens. Attention to detail is evident, and the theme of the supper club even extends into the “Ladies Room.” The bar to the left of the Hostess is filled with large comfortable couches, a large bar area and the perfect place for the start to a romantic night or catching up with friends. The main dining room holds the stage, and to the right is a smaller, quaint dining room with a wide variety of seating, including more private, secluded alcove rooms.

I caution you, that although you can dine alone, it is inadvisable, as the servings are meant for sharing. Untitled is meant for sharing! I can attest to this, as I dined alone. My gastronomic exploration was one of the most incredible culinary experiences I have had in a long time. The attention to detail again comes to mind as I was impressed with the simple embellishments that turned a simple deviled egg into “wow!” My head waiter was Colin. After sharing with me his recommendation for a nice “red,” he took the time to share with me the goal of the chef and the desired outcome of “Untitled.” Considering that he was with Untitled Supper Club from its grand opening, he was very capable of fulfilling the philosophy of the establishment. We discussed the simplicity of deviled eggs being on the menu which are a representation of what might have been served during the prohibition period. (somehow the name deviled goes well with the sinful nature of the cuisine, do not go expecting to remain on a low fat, under 1,000 calorie day!)

There are two categories on the Tasting Menu. One is priced at $69 and the other $44. I was able to enjoy a wonderful crossover of the two categories, with Colin paying close attention to my allergies and likes. The Chef tossed in a few surprises which as I understand is his prerogative. All of the wait staff went out of their way to ensure that I was being well taken care of. Now, one might say, “well, they knew who you were!” It didn't matter as I observed how others were treated, and I saw no difference in the level of care, service and attention given to all the patrons. (I will share below what items I had and expound on them at the close of this article)

A very friendly voice turned my attention away from the delights before me, it was manager Daniel Barat. He offered me more red wine and kindly engaged in a little banter about the place and was stopping by to make sure that I was comfortable. He generously offered to show me around later on if I was able to stay around past 10. I knew in an instance that both Daniel and Colin, truly believed in the supper club and all that it had to offer those who sought refuge in the warm escape. The food, lighting, colors, sound all lured me into a sense of well-being. I assured Daniel that I would love nothing more than to explore more of what Untitled had to offer. I expressed that the sheer decadence of Untitled guarantees that no one leaves without feeling their seductive side swell to a wonderful crescendo.

I look forward to visiting Untitled Supper Club again and again. I will be certain to come with friends the next time. I highly recommend this venue as it is perfect for a night of romance, escape, and a passionate exploration into the way dining should be.

“mes assiettes du plaisir” (my plates of pleasure)
  • Chef’s Charcuterie & Cheese
  • Deviled Farm Eggs, w/ bacon-n-chives, peperonata
  • Genesis Farms Greens, w/ capriole farmstead goat cheese with a light touch of citrus
  • Bacon Wrapped Dates, w/ yogurt and pine nut garnish
  • Crispy Squash Blossoms, (house made ricotta, truffle honey)
  • Pork Belly Hash, bacon, peas, over easy egg,
  • Grilled Asparagus, with salt pork, fried farm egg
  • Whiskey Ginger Carrots
  • Pan Roasted Tenderloin Fillet, with fried grits

I thought about rating each dish, but, I simply cannot, each was spectacular. The use of eggs as a combination was a wonderful surprise and added a delightful richness. I truly regretted that I could not eat more of each item, but, the quantity of tastes and the sumptuousness contributed nicely to a feeling of contentment. I regret not experiencing dessert as the descriptions put a nice modern spin on old time favorites: Chocolate Mousse, Strawberry Shortcake, Creme Brulee, and Apple Pie.

On a personal note: I think it is important for us to remember the way it was, the way it should be and just revel in the way our parents and grandparents celebrated a night out before we became locked in to heavily chained dining establishments. Go ahead indulge...you will be glad you did!

New Zealand Conquers Chicago's Wine Scene With "Complexity"

"Up on the roof" was the song that was swimming through my head as my sister Marissa Rapier and I joined the Complexity crew. It was a glorious Sunday (June 9) at Wrigleyville, Chicago. The NZ sips Chicago wine event was held atop the Brixen Ivy considered one of Wrigley's Rooftop establishments. Imagine walking in to a naturally lit room overlooking Wrigley Field surrounded by winemakers from New Zealand, Kiwi accents filling the room, beautiful wine bottles carefully displayed for our impending pleasure. Imagine the excitement of the first pitch. The streets below quickly filling with Chicago Cub fans. Their excitement rose up to blend with the joy that was filling the room and was only equal to the first pour by Rudi Bauer as he carefully poured Quartz Reef Methode Traditionelle non Vintage, Central Otago into our glasses like a papa handing off his first born!

I invite you to listen to my audio blog, a celebration of New Zealand and the Complexity crew. Then go to your local wine shops, vendors, and restaurants and ask that they begin to offer New Zealand wines. Truly a sensory experience you won't soon forget!

Moe Did It Again, The Pickle and Turnip

The Pickle and Turnip, located in downtown Michigan City, Indiana is the newest endeavor of Moe Mroueh. After outgrowing his prior establishment, Sahara, located south of the downtown area, it was time to move up and northward! Champagne and LaLuna stopped in last night to enjoy the new place. We were not disappointed! Moe has chosen to decorate his newest endeavor in a very bright, minimalist approach. Simple, classic, clean lines. Much like you would find in an upscale loft in the heart of Manhattan. While the decor is simple, the cuisine is not. The food is better than ever. We shared the best avocado salad we have ever had. The hummus is without a doubt the best anywhere around, and the dolma (stuffed grape leaves) are to die for! We enjoyed our favorite wine, served up right by Moe, Ksara Reserve du Couvent.

Make sure you like The Pickle and Turnip on Facebook so that you can be made privy to the wine events that are a big hit. Get your reservations now for the "First Friday" of June.

The place was quickly filling with diners, and everyone of them was having a wonderful time. With this in mind, it really is a good idea to make reservations. After all, it was a Monday Night!

It's Vegas Baby, Viva Italia!

Champagne and LaLuna took a walk on the Italian side of this acoustic duet. Tonight in place of our traditional wedge salad at William B's which is outstanding BTW, we tried out the Italian night at "It's Vegas Baby" lounge. Typically this restaurant caters to what appears to be the younger set, or those looking for some single-like action. The promotional genius of Boyd Gaming and Blue Chip Casino, Michigan City, knew what they were doing in transforming the casino's hot spot in to a warm and cozy Italian Village flair. From the quaint red checked table clothes, to the "Rat Pack" stylings of Dean, Frank, Rosemary and the gang. To add to the charm, the video display treated us to images of Vegas and the days of glitz and glam that can only be found east of Hollywood in the heart of the desert.

Before getting into the food, I have to applaud our waitress, Andrea. She was not only glamorous, but, exactly what I would expect from a high end Vegas establishment. Lei e molto bella! She was graceful, attentive, and did I mention Showgirl Glamorous? She was lovely. Now on to the food.

For a modest price of $12.95 you receive your choice of zuppa, minestrone or pasta fagioli. Insalata of your choice, either house tossed or Cesaer. I recommend the tossed, with field greens, cucumber, tomatoes and onion, a pani basket with herb/olive oil and balsamic drizzle, your choice of pasta tossed with sauce of choice and for a modest additional price you can add a carne (protein). All of this is followed up with either spumoni ice cream or a cannoli.

Do not forget to treat yourself to a wonderful glass or for the price go for the bottle of vino! We enjoyed a wonderful red, pictured at the beginning of this article. We will be back again, and next time, we will arrive a little later, so that we can hang around and enjoy the Dueling Pianos right out of Howl At the Moon in Chicago. Whether it is Vegas Baby in the dessert realm, or Vegas baby of the Chicagoland variety, Boyd Gaming knows how to do it right!

The Consummate Professionals at William B's

What is the "Consummate Professional?" The "CP" is a person who without wavering conviction fulfills their role as a professional to the letter. Who without question exudes, joy, pride and service, putting your their patron, (not customer, but patron there is a big difference) above all else. Rarely do you encounter a "CP" anymore, as it is not in keeping with a millenial approach to service. Sadly, the art of "CP" is slipping away as more and more "CP's" and that approach to service is being put out to pasture.
I am here to celebrate "Consummate Professionals" and what they add to a dining experience. How wonderful it is for Steve and I that all we have to do is travel a short distance to find, not one, but many a "CP!" You will find them smiling and awaiting your arrival at Blue Chip Casino, Michigan City. Walk through the revolving doors, look to your left and "right this way your table's waiting" smiles will greet you. William B's Steakhouse is Blue Chip's high end restaurant.
Our favorite place to experience a spa dining experience is William B's. Why? Well, the food is wonderful, fresh, inviting, and you can expect pride in what is served. But, because of the service. Let's begin with Patrick. Patrick oversees William B's. Patrick has an magnetic personality. He knows the business and he knows the business! Rarely do you find someone who not only says hello, but, extends his hand to you. A gentleman's gentleman. He knows his wine, still enjoys a fine cigar, and he "get's it!" Rarely does a lady ever get the back of her hand kissed anymore. Rarely does a lady get the linen napkin placed upon her lap. In moments like that you are elevated to a position of esteem, royalty and yes, in those rare moments you experience how the "1%" live on a continuum. Patrick, you know your business and you know how to treat people. It is one of the reasons we keep coming back for more! Thank you for inviting us into your dining room.
In addition to Patrick, our waiter last night was the closest I will ever get to a man in waiting, or a butler. Wayne was careful, meticulous, was relaxed, but, was about the business of serving his patrons with style. I found myself wondering how many top shelf wines he has served in his time. How many thick cut steaks. The stories he could tell, but, NEVER would, as he is not only a consummate professional, but a gentleman! Wayne, you served us in style and kept well with the tradition of fine dining. (You didn't even flinch when the woman with the over-sized purse sitting on the floor nearly broke your neck! Without batting an eye, you said, "here, let me help you put it on the chair next to you! Style my friend, STYLE and CLASS!) Thank you for recommending Newton Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon. We enjoyed slowly savoring, each sip of what turned out to be perfect pairing with our meal. In addition, the way in which you prepared the wine so as to fully experience the bouquet, color and complexity was deeply appreciated.
Thirdly I would like to include Pete in with the "CP" club located at William B's. Pete is a tall distinguished looking gentleman that can be found behind William B's front end bar. He is one of the first points of contact when walking in Blue Chip Casino. You will see Pete standing at attention, ready to serve, awaiting his next patron. Be prepared for a very professional encounter. His demeanor is straight forward, but, after he professionally serves you, you can expect an enlightened, articulate conversationalist. He is a renaissance man with deep integrity, and pride. He towers above the Pines!
In closing, if you want to experience what Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, the "Mad Men" of the past experienced. If you have never been on a cruse, or to a 4 star resort, then you must visit Blue Chip's "Consummate Professionals" and find out how what you have been missing.

Copper Rock Steak House _ Four Winds Casino and Resort is Top SHELF!

Copper Rock Steak House, the top shelf restaurant of Four Winds Casino and Resort, located in New Buffalo Michigan is one of my absolute favorite places to dine. While it is a $$ for a frequent visit, it is without a doubt worth the $$. Why is it considered one of my top 3 places to dine? 1) it is in a close proximity to where I live, easily accessible. 2)The staff is extremely welcoming, friendly and they make you feel as though your being there matters. The multiple levels of staff see to your every need. 3)The menu selections are outstanding, and generous 4) Awesome wine! Each meal is served up with a basket of the most amazing bread, and spreads to adorn the palatable pleasures. Every meal is not complete until a delectable Beignet is served up with a warning to "pop it all in your mouth at once or you will wear the dark chocolate truffle hidden inside!" Trust me, you will not want to miss one single drop of this hot chocolate delight! Some of my favorites off the menu is;Himalayan Tenderloin~Presented on a Himalayan Pink Salt Brick, Olive Oil, Arugula & Grilled Cheese Bread Burrata Caprese Salad~Bruno Russo Tomatoes, Burrata Cheese, Fine aged Balsamic Vinegar & Olive Oil French Onion Soup~Three Cheese Crust Chicken Saltimbocca~Roasted Chicken Breast Filled with Fontina, Prosciutto, Fresh Sage & Brown Butter Prime rib of Beef~U.S.D.A.
